FFA Cup giant killers sbothai8 APIA Leichhardt have made an offer to AS Roma legend Francesco Totti in the hope of having the retired 41-year-old take part in their quarter final clash with Adelaide United on September 26.

APIA have a strong link with the Italian club’s academy in Australia, and as such Roma legend Gieussepe Giannini is locked on to come to Sydney for the Cup clash and run some academy sessions in the week after the game.

The NPL finalists have put an offer in to Totti, and are hoping that Giannini can persuade the recently retired star to play.

Giannini played 437 times for Roma across a 15-year stint at the club, and Totti has openly admitted the now 54-year-old was his idol growing up.

“Il Principe was my idol, my role model when I was a kid,” Totti told Roma’s official site.

“I always followed in his footsteps even though we played in different positions. sbothai8 I saw him as a captain, as everything. I met him, played with him and shared a room with him. He taught me loads.”

APIA are aware the move may be a long shot, but have put in an offer in the hope of pulling off a major coup, and are awaiting a response from Totti’s management.

Totti is one of the most decorated Italian superstars of his generation and remarkably retired as a one-club player. The 58-time international played his entire career with Roma, racking up a whopping 786 appearances for the club in all competitions – netting 307 goals in the process.

After a 24-year career with his boyhood side, Totti confirmed his retirement at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, and was immediately appointed a club director.

The veteran won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, and also boasts a Serie A title, two Italian Cups, a European golden shoe and is also a five-time Italian Footballer of the Year.

The move comes hot on the heels of Avondale FC’s audacious play to lure former Juventus and AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo to Australia for their own Cup clash with Sydney FC. sbothai8
